Joshua began working in metal in 1996, apprenticing with an artist blacksmith in Chantilly, Virginia. That early experience shaped how he approaches both the craft and the work itself. Over the next 14 years, Joshua lent his talents to a variety of metal shops, contributing to projects of all scales. From decorative light fixtures, ornamental gates, fences, handrails, and architectural objects to grand staircases and large structural elements. Those years taught him how to balance design, function, and the realities of fabrication.
In 2010, Joshua founded J. Gilbert & Co. to focus on custom commissions of his own design. Since then, he has worked closely with designers, architects, contractors, and private individuals to develop one-of-a-kind pieces tailored to specific spaces and needs.
Joshua spends his professional time making custom metalwork by hand. Working with fire, steel, and skills honed over decades to create functional, decorative objects and installations. He spends his free time making all sorts of other stuff like robots and textiles and butter chicken curry. In addition to the ironwork, if you ever need recommendations for a good sewing machine, or a killer banana bread recipe, I've got you covered.
Joshua's work is strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau style, particularly its emphasis on craftsmanship, movement, and organic form. He also draws a great deal of inspiration from the natural world, looking at how growth, structure, and organic pattern can translate into metal. Engineering and mechanical design are also a particular interest of his, an artist who likes math!
Joshua named his business "J. Gilbert and Company" to reflect both the spirit of collaboration with clients, and the large network of artists and craftspeople whose talents one can call on in this great city. Through these professional and personal connections, there is no project a client might request that wouldn't be able to achieve a quality result.
Alongside his studio practice, Joshua currently teaches blacksmithing, welding, and fabrication at CIADC (the Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center) in Rogers Park. He is also a certified instructor for the ABANA (Artist Blacksmith Association of North America) national curriculum.
Every project J. Gilbert & Co. takes on is approached with care, patience, and respect for the material and intent. If you’re interested in commissioning a custom piece or discussing a potential project, we're always happy to answer questions.
